Family members say the victims were a mother and her three-year-old daughter. They also said another child, a five-year-old son, was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
According to Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian, the Sheriff's Office received a call from the resident manager at The Park at Rocky Ridge Apartments around 11:30 a.m. The manager told them a woman and her two children were believed to be dead inside of their apartment.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found an adult female and a female child deceased. A five-year-old male was found wounded, but still alive. He was airlifted to Children's Hospital with critical injuries.
Christian said all of the victims appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has not officially released the identities of the victims, but friends and family at the Rocky Ridge crime scene said the mother's name is Tiffany Bozeman, age 30.
Family members identified the deceased girl as Bozeman's daughter, three-year-old Gabrielle Menefee, and the five-year-old boy airlifted to Children's Hospital as her son Davion Menefee.
Family member Shu'Kela Menefee tells FOX6 she got a call while at Alabama State University to come back to Birmingham immediately. Once here, she said she learned that her uncle, Brandon Menefee, was dead. Her family began calling his girlfriend, Tiffany, to see if she knew anything.
Shu'Kela Menefee says family members couldn't get in touch with Tiffany after repeated calls, so they went to her apartment to find her. There they met up with a family friend who had already discovered Tiffany and the two children shot inside, Menefee said. Family members say Brandon Menefee was the father of the two children and Bozeman was their mother.
Detectives say preliminary information has led them to believe the incident at the Rocky Ridge apartments may be connected to a male's body found in a car in Fairfield Wednesday morning. Investigators think this may be a murder-suicide. The Sheriff's Office is working with Fairfield investigators on this possibility.
Shu'Kela Menefee says she finds it hard to believe her uncle would be responsible for the killings.
"I can't imagine him doing anything like that…he's willing
to give everything to those kids...they were his everything, especially the little girl," she said.
The Jefferson County coroner removed the bodies from the second story apartment in Rocky Ridge around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
More information will be released as the investigation progresses.
