BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Alabama Power crews have restored service to most of their customers who lost power due to Monday's storms, the company said Wednesday.
As of noon on Wednesday, 48,900 Alabama Power customers were still without power. The largest number of customers, 33,900 people, were located east of Birmingham; 9,300 customers without power were in metro Birmingham and 5,700 people were without power west of Birmingham
Alabama Power also listed a projected schedule of when they hope to restore service to different parts of the state:
-By midnight Tuesday, they hope to have power restored for 90 percent of customers affected by Monday's storms in greater Birmingham, Hoover, Hueytown, Haleyville and Fayette.
-By midnight Wednesday, the remaining customers in those areas, as well as customers in the hard-hit areas of Jasper, Carbon Hill, Dora, Hayden, Warrior, Trussville and Leeds should have power.
-By midnight Wednesday, service should be restored to 90 percent of the customers in Talladega and Roanoke.
-By midnight Thursday, the power company hoped to restore electricity to the hardest hit areas of Anniston, Jacksonville, Heflin, Gadsden, Pell City and Oneonta.
"The damage is extensive, and extremely widespread… Some customers in areas where there is heavy or complicated damage may not get power until later this week," Alabama Power said on their website Monday.
The company is bringing in workers from other states to help restore power. Crews from 10 states, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, are helping Alabama Power workers. A total of 3,500 workers are expected to join in the restoration efforts.
Alabama Power notes they occassionally need to turn power back off for a short period of time to restore electricity at other homes in a community. Company officials say the interruption is temporary and the customer does not need to report the outage again unless it "becomes prolonged."
