Mason Katz hit two 2-run homers, including the tie-breaking shot in the top of the tenth inning, as Paul Mainieri's team rallied to take a 10-inning 6-4 win at Mississippi State in their SEC opener.
Katz's two homers ups his total to eight on the season. He also currently has 31 RBI.
Joey Bourgeois pitched out of a bases-loaded eighth inning jam to allow the LSU Tigers to make it to extra innings. Bourgeois struck out MSU slugger Hunter Renfroe, who had homered off Aaron Nola to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Bourgeois pitched a perfect inning and a third after coming into the game in the bottom of the 8th. He also retired Demarcus Henderson on a double play started by Katz. Bourgeois picked up the win for the Tigers, improving to 2-0 on the season.
Nola got the start for the Tigers and was touched up for nine hits and four earned runs in five and two third innings of work. The sophomore pitcher from Catholic High only had four strike outs and walked one batter.
After giving up the homerun to Renfroe in the 1st inning, Nola gave up one hit until he got to the 5th inning, where the Bulldogs tacked on two more runs.
While the LSU pitching staff may have hit seven batters in the game, they forced Mississippi State to hit into four double plays.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6:00pm.
Ryan Eades (3-0) will take the mound for the Tigers with a team leading 1.80 ERA.
