Fire department volunteers needed

Posted: Updated:
LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

First responders really felt the strain from Thursday's fire in Lauderdale County.

Most of the volunteers that worked the fire still had regular jobs to go to, yet they didn't think twice before taking the call in the early morning hours.

Rural communities like Central Heights cannot afford to have full-time firefighters, so they rely on volunteers to get the jobs done.

Sometimes it means working long hours into the night and missing part of their paying jobs.

For example, in Thursday's fatal fire, volunteers from four different departments responded to the scene.

They worked for nearly nine hours, staying until their job was done, leaving only with a thank you and maybe a pat on the back.

No matter where you live, volunteers are always needed within the fire departments.

You do not have to fight fires. They need help with simple things like cleaning the station and washing trucks.

Officials said if you want to volunteer, all you have to do is visit your local department and tell them you want to help.
