MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Larry Gaddis says he's like many tenants living in apartments: he doesn't have renter's insurance.

"I just hadn't gotten around to it. I guess, not really expecting the unexpected to happen," Gaddis said.

Veronica Brown knows all to well the unexpected will happen. In fact, she just lost everything Tuesday when her unit burned along with seven others at Bridge Croft Apartment complex.

"We didn't have any renter's insurance or anything. It was water damage, smoke damage, everything was just all destroyed. That just woke us up, just telling us to just gone get your renter's insurance," Brown said.

ALFA Insurance Agent Steve Bullington says renter's insurance policies on apartments rank at the bottom of the policies he's written.

"The same people that won't get out on the highway in a car without liability insurance on their car, will move everything they own in an apartment and have not coverage on it and a lot of apartment complexes now are requiring it, but people just don't think about it," Bullington said.

And it's really inexpensive compared to auto and homeowner's insurance. Bullington says the average policy with property coverage between $10,000 to $15,000 will run you about $10 a month.

"The time to call for renter's insurance is not just after you've had a fire which was not insured. You can keep at least a general inventory of what you have. Keep a copy with a friend or in a safety deposit box," Bullington said.

Bullington says you can bundle services and save money. You can get renter's insurance, auto insurance and even life insurance with one agency.

To get more information on a renter's insurance policy, you can contact Steve Bullington at 334-288-0375. To find your local ALFA agent, call 1-800-964-2532. To find your local State Farm agent, call 1-855-733-7333. To get a quote over the phone, you can call GEIGO at 1-800-841-2964.
