MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning handed out two big checks Wednesday morning.

The Army Emergency Relief Fund gives interest free loans to soldiers and veterans.

The group Concerns for Police Survivors helps families who lose a loved one in the line of duty.

Both groups received $6500.

Leslie Freeman attended the ceremony.

Her husband, Officer Eric Freeman, was killed on the job in 2007.

" I know from personal experience, it's such a blessing, it's such a comfort to know that  people that you've never met, people that you've never crossed paths with, they're stepping up and reaching out to give you a helping hand when you've been knocked down," said Freeman.

The money for Wednesday's donations was raised at the sheriff's rodeo in February.
