HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The flexibility bill, the Alabama Accountability Act, passed the Alabama legislature last month. It includes giving tax credits to parents who move their children from a failing public school to a private school.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said he sent a letter to the governor expressing his concerns about the bill.
He said he worries about the long-term effects it could have on public education.
"It takes money from public education and gives it to the private education sector and eventually what it does is weakens out public education system. That's a danger to me," he said.
A Montgomery judge has issued a temporary restraining order, stopping the governor from signing the bill.
The Republicans have filed an appeal with the Alabama Supreme Court.
