HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
It is tax season and also open season on unsuspecting tax filers who receive bogus e-mails, supposedly from the Internal Revenue Service.
Even Michele Mason, the director of the North Alabama Better Business Bureau, has received these fake e-mails claiming to be from the IRS.
Her warning: Do not respond. These scams pop up every year.
"Most are designed to get you to open an attachment or click on a link that's saying it's from the IRS. It's usually either something saying that you have a refund or there's an issue and they're trying to get you to open an attachment to a document so you can see what the document's about," Mason said.
She said do not open the email and do not fall for the scam.
The IRS is not going to send you an e-mail. She said they will notify you in a more formal way, by letter or phone call.
