Officials with BRAVE program ready to take next step

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Officials with the Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination program, better known as BRAVE are ready to take the next big step in the process.

East baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore says authorities will soon initiate the "call in" section of the program. Moore explains the "call in" step targets certain individuals who are considered gang leaders or individuals with some control or a particular group of others. These individuals often have extensive criminal background and are either on parole or probation.

Moore says authorities use the legal control they have over the person to mandate a meeting and at that meeting, they issue a stern warning.

"If there is one more act of violence from that person or the group he represents, 700 law enforcement officers are going to be focusing on that person and that group," Moore said.

The goal of the ‘call ins' is to get the attention of the offender and give them a clear choice.

"You let them know that things have been going on one way, but as of this meeting- things are different," Moore said.

Moore says they will also have faith-based and prominent community leaders there at the individual meetings. He says those leaders will make it clear that they are with the police and will not tolerate the behavior anymore.

"They will tell them we love you, but we don't love what you do," Moore said.

Moore didn't want to give specific time frames but alluded to be watching as he said the "call ins" will begin ‘very soon.'
