Candles shine at St. Bernard

CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

Brother David Bryant unveiled some of his latest creations. He is constantly working to perfect an already beautiful pillar candle sold at St. Bernard, and the scent choices are heavenly.

"So you put the plumber's putty around the bottom of the wick pin, stick it in, and lock it into place," said Bryant, as he showed how the candles are made.

The hot wax is drawn from a vat to a pitcher. Fragrance and color are added before the wax goes into the molds.

"So I'm going to start off with the red, and I'm going to add black to that," Bryant added.

Drop by drop is added until he gets the results he wants. He tests a sample, which gets darker as the wax sets. It will take the candles about seven or eight hours to set in the molds.

Candles are not the only items being made there.  Sweet smelling soaps are also on the menu.

Bryant shows how to make the soap as well.

"This is a five pound block of olive oil soap base. And the good thing is you can read right there so you know what's in it," he said.

Ingredients like glycerin, which are good for your skin. It's cut up and heated. Bryant works his magic adding color and scents like lavender and puts it into old cafeteria trays.

"Last year was the first year I made soaps for 'Blooming Festival,' and I think we made - my goodness, we made about 100 pounds of soap and well, we were sold out before noon," he said.

After it sets, he cuts the soap into bars.

The monastery candle shop has been around for eight years. This year they plan to expand.

People can buy candles or soap online or go to Cullman to make their purchases in Bobby's Bama.
