Months later, still no answers in Athens woman's murder

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

It's been more than three months since an Athens woman was found dead in her apartment.  No arrests have been made in the case, and friends are speaking out to make sure no one forgets about the woman they describe as loving and very forgiving.

Genary Hicks said she won't be able to forget November 30, 2012.  That was the day that lost her friend, neighbor, and fellow church member, Sharon Wellington.

"She mattered and so she could not be forgotten, she will not be forgotten," said Hicks.  "It's been frustrating off and on because we miss her and we know that there is no way to bring her back but whoever did it, we don't know anything.  We don't know if it was an accident, if someone did it on purpose. All of us need answers."

But Wellington's friends and family haven't been able to get answers yet.  It's been months since Sharon was found stabbed to death in her Athens apartment.

"We don't want her to be forgotten," Hicks said. "She won't be forgotten by us, but we don't want her to be forgotten by the police department or anybody else."

Athens Police said they are still investigating her murder.  They said they can't release too much information because they don't want to compromise the case.

They said they are waiting for some things to come back that could help them catch Wellington's killer.

Now, all Hicks and those who knew and loved Sharon can do is pray for justice.

"Many of us have already forgiven them, but it's the question of accountability and what is right," said Hicks.  "We know that they can't take it back and we know that them being arrested will not erase the pain that all of us have gone through, but we want them to turn themselves in."
