Gurley couple beaten during weekend burglary

GURLEY, AL (WAFF) -

Two people were beaten during a robbery in Gurley over the weekend.

Investigators said James Howard Stewart beat a man and a woman at their home on Childress Street, Saturday.

They said he forced his way inside the home and beat the couple. He didn't take anything, but he appeared to be under the influence of drugs, according to investigators.

The victims were taken to the hospital. The woman was treated and released, but the man is still recovering with non-life-threatening injuries.

Their names have not been released.

Neighbors who heard the commotion rushed to the couple's aid and held Stewart down until deputies could arrive and arrest him.

They said as Stewart was being held on the ground, he called himself God and said he was going to kill everyone.

Stewart was charged with two counts of assault and one count of burglary. This was not his first run in with the law; Stewart has several drug charges on his rap sheet going all the way back to 2004.

He was booked into the Metro Jail on $90,000 bond.
