HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A former member of Alabama's Supreme Court and the current state Democratic Party leader called the controversy surrounding the school flex bill the latest black eye with the current legislature.

Judge Mark Kennedy made the remarks while at an event for the Madison County Women Democrats, Thursday.

Kennedy centered much of his frustration on the education reform bill, a bill that's caused uproar among the Democratic Party over the way it passed in the legislature.

Kennedy also responded to Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard's comments that the circuit court judge overstepped his judicial reach when he allowed an injunction Wednesday.

Kennedy said the judicial branch has the authority to rule in that way.

He also had these harsh words for the current legislature.

"In my many years of public service and my years of living in Montgomery, I've never seen a legislature, whether it be controlled by the Democrats or Republicans, engage in such an abuse of power," said Kennedy.

The education reform legislation will be discussed in another hearing on March 15.
