GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Trees by the hundreds are being planted at Lake Guntersville State Park.

It comes nearly two years after deadly tornadoes swept through the area, destroying many of the trees in the park.

This past year, one of the biggest complaints about the campground was the lack of trees, but contractors began the process of planting nearly 500 new trees in the campground area of the park this week.

Unlike the pines before them, the new trees will be hardwoods, primarily oak and maple trees.

They are getting a head start by putting up trees already 12 to 20 feet tall.

Park officials said campers should notice an immediate difference, and they look forward to giving campers some shade this year.

"I know they have a load of trees still on the way. They've moved pretty quick. Just the trees they've put up this week has made a tremendous difference in the campground in its appearance," said acting assistant park superintendent, Nick Guinn. "It actually looks like a campground."

Park officials estimate the trees will all be planted by sometime next week.
