Beach Convention Hotel Bill to build resort hotel moves to Senate

Posted: Updated:

A Senate committee has voted to move a bill to the Senate floor that would allow a convention center and hotel to be built directly on the Gulf of Mexico.

If passed, funds from the BP Oil Settlement could be used to fund a resort that would attract visitors to Gulf Shores.

The committee amended the bill to assure that any business proposals in connection with the project would be reviewed by a joint oversight commission.

In another development, the committee requested information about any past insurance money collected on the previous hotel that was damaged by Ivan.

Five committee members voted to return a favorable report to the Senate on the bill.

Republican Sens. Dick Brubaker, of Montgomery and Paul Sanford, of Huntsville, opposed relaying the measure.
