ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

A bill introduced into the senate is causing some concern for local law enforcement.  Senate Bill 286 deals with guns in Alabama, more specifically who can have them, when, and where.

It has received several co-sponsors from lawmakers, but sheriffs say it is a bad bill.

Senate Bill 286 is 31 pages long and has language that worries Alabama law enforcement.

"I think that if the average citizen looks at this bill, they will see that it's a bad bill for Alabama," said Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely.

He said there are a lot of things in the document that concern him.

"This particular bill is far reaching, and one thing that is extremely disturbing to me, it says 'this bill would repeal the prohibition against the possession of a firearm at a public demonstration.' Now for some reason, I find it hard to believe that our senators and legislators would pass something like this," he said.

The bill discusses fees for pistol permits and background checks for those who apply for them, carrying a pistol on public and private property, and more.

Blakely thinks bills like 286 are a reaction to the debate on gun control in Washington.

"This bill is like a horse with four broken legs: You can't fix it, you need to kill it; and I hope that our legislators in North Alabama will really take a serious look at this and talk to some citizens other than just some extremist groups that want to turn it into the old Wild West days, and I think common sense will prevail," Blakely said.
