Accused squatters refuse to leave $3 million house

(WMC-TV) - It was eviction day for the accused squatters taking over a multi-million dollar Memphis mansion, but the unwanted guests are still inside.

The bank-imposed deadline to leave was 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Shady Grove Road is a high-end neighborhood. It is where investigators said a self-proclaimed sovereign citizen is squatting in a foreclosed home valued at about $3 million.

"We were just really surprised," said neighbor Vallie Jo Bell.

Bell lives directly across the street from the $3 million dollar mansion that is for sale.

A foreclosure that is supposed to be empty.

"I hadn't noticed anything different at all. Nothing different. I would've never known they were over there," said Bell.

Self-proclaimed Moorish American Nationals moved-in and are living here without paying a dime.

"We'll, I'm stunned really," said neighbor David Peck.

Peck lives next door, where he has resided for the past 23 years.

"I know the two former owners. And I knew the house was on the market, but I've never heard of anything like this," said Peck.

Daniel Brown cleans the pool weekly.

Last week, everything was normal.

On Monday, he showed up to a chained gate, no trespassing signs, and a hand-written claim.

"The signage said the bank cannot own property, and that they had the original deed to the house and that they were taking them to court and there were eight other properties," said Brown.

By e-mail the Moors inside said their indigenous ancestry grants them ownership of this property. Also, it said that they believe in love, truth, peace, freedom and justice.

"Well I wouldn't want to be their neighbor," said Peck. "They're obviously not compatible with people that are currently living out here."

Would rather the new neighbors get out and find another place to live.

"I hope they'll get out and maybe find another place to live," said Bell.

MLGW said the utilities are still on. Neighbors said the home has no furniture in it.

Government attorneys at both 201 Poplar and city hall said they're trying to figure out if the matter is criminal or civil.
