LACEY'S SPRING, AL (WAFF) -

A new light in Morgan County is causing some confusion for drivers. On Monday, the light at the intersection of Highway 231 and Highway 36 went from flashing to functional in Lacey's Spring.

Now that the light is up and running, some drivers are running it.

ALDOT workers said the light was added to solve turning problems at the busy intersection.

Driver Darla Todd said the intersection needed something to keep drivers safe.

"It's been a very dangerous place," she said.  "I hope it will make it better because nobody wants to be in a wreck."

The intersection has seen several wrecks over the years. Some drivers think the light will hurt, not help.

"It's just going to be hard for the people going north and south bound because they aren't used to that red light," said Derrick Morgan.

Driver Mike Rogers agrees.

"I realize there have been a lot of accidents here, but I don't see how this going to help any," he said.  "It just looks like trouble waiting to happen."

Deputies waited on the side of the road Tuesday afternoon to make drivers aware of the new light. ALDOT 2nd Division Engineer James Brown said they have been working on getting the light up and running for the last five months.

"The two northbound lanes on 231 going into Huntsville will just free flow," he said.  "They won't have to stop. But if they were north bound on 231 and wanted to go west on 36, they would have a signal that would tell them when it was okay for them to proceed across."

Morgan County deputies urge drivers to be careful during that intersection.  They say they have given out several tickets for running the light in the past two days.
