NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Police are investigating a break-in Tuesday at U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander's west Nashville home.
The burglary was reported just after 4 p.m. along Brighton Road, and police said Alexander was not home at the time.
Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said they believe the crime was random in nature, and the thieves likely did not even know it was a senator's home.
"There is no indication at this point that this home was burglarized because of who lives here," Aaron said. "We think this was a crime of opportunity. There were some delivery boxes at the rear door. The burglar probably knocked on the front door, didn't get an answer, they came around back."
Items stolen from the home include jewelry and silverware, police said.
Alexander was in Washington, and his wife, Honey, reported the break-in when she returned home.
