MIDFIELD, AL (WBRC) -
A Midfield Elementary School Assistant Principal is under arrest for child abuse.
Larry McSwain, 29, has been charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse after two students made the allegations.
Warrants for McSwain's arrest, warrants were obtained by Midfield police last week but McSwain wasn't arrested until Monday, March 4. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and bonded out less than two hours later.
FOX6 News has learned that at least one of the incidents happened at the Midfield Elementary School. Midfield Superintendent Demica Sanders says when her office first learned of the allegations about three weeks ago, she immediately placed McSwain on administrative leave and the system began its own investigation along with police.
According to the Alabama Criminal Code, aggravated child abuse is when someone tortures, willfully abuses or cruelly beats a person under 18 on more than one occassion; or in violation of a court order; or to the point that it causes serious physical injury. The charge is a Class B felony which carries a possible punishment of two to 20 years in prison.
Superintendent Sanders says based on the school system's investigation she is going to recommend that McSwain be terminated. It will be up to the board of education to determine if they will accept or rejec tthat recommendation.
