Broken water main floods, buckles Hermitage Avenue

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Water Department workers have repaired a broken water main along Hermitage Avenue near downtown Nashville.

However, it will be awhile longer before the road reopens for traffic.

Road crews will have to repair the road on Wednesday morning where the damage occurred before traffic can return to the busy route into downtown Nashville.

A 36-inch water main broke about 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of Hermitage Avenue, just west of Fesslers Lane.

Witnesses reported the street and nearby sidewalks are buckling because of the amount of water seeping to the surface in the area. Several surrounding streets were also blocked due to high water.

While it is not one of those really old pipes that broke a few years ago downtown, this one is big enough that it will take time to get the parts needed to make repairs.

Metro police officers have been re-routing people around the busy commuter route, and officials said Hermitage Avenue will likely be closed Wednesday morning as well.

Only one customer remains without water, but several businesses were without water earlier Tuesday, which caused just minor inconvenience.

Work will continue through the night to identify the problem, then get it fixed.
