Basketball player gets fouled, returns to game with gun

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A disagreement during a neighborhood basketball game took a violent turn when one of the players thought he was being intentionally fouled.

There was no referee to blow the whistle because this was a pick-up game played in the street.  But even if there was a referee, these Terminal Court residents were playing a game called 21.  It's an every-man-for-himself variation of basketball where fouls are allowed and out-of-bounds doesn't exist.

One of the men playing the game said the trouble began at about 3 p.m. Friday when things started to get too rough.

Jerrell Jones said the suspect announced that he was going back to his car to grab some tennis shoes, but what he was really getting was his gun.

"I was winning.  I don't see why he had to argue with us though.  You know how when you're playing basketball, you get fouled and stuff?  That's what it's really about.  Because he got slapped the wrong way- thought people wanted to fight.  But he said, 'I don't want to fight, I'm just going to shoot.' And he didn't stop after one or two shots- he shot four or five times, probably more than that," said Jones.

Columbus police have announced they're looking for 22-year-old Trevor Marshall, who also goes by the nickname "Twin."  Authorities believe he is the man who shot 33-year-old Elekist Wheeler during that game.  Wheeler was hit once in the abdomen and he was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

In addition to aggravated assault, police plan to charge Marshall with reckless conduct.  They said many residents were out and about that afternoon on Terminal Court and more people could have easily been hit by stray bullets.

Jones said he knows Marshall, but he didn't see him at the game.  He believes the shooting suspect is a different person who he's never met prior to the Friday incident.

Efforts to reach the victim, Wheeler, for comment were unsuccessful.
