FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
Democrats blasted the school flexibility bill and the way republicans voted it into effect.
Alabama Senator Roger Bedford said not only is the bill a poor choice for the Alabama school system, but he said the manner in which it was passed violated state policy.
Bedford believes this bill will do more harm than good to public schools, allowing charter schools to establish themselves in the state.
He also said taking away the tenure rule will allow schools to hire teachers based on politics instead of who is the best teacher.
Procedurally Bedford said Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey and several other GOP leaders broke policy by meeting in an undisclosed location, taking a quorum, and then forcing it through the senate without debate or discussion.
Bedford said several groups are preparing to file a lawsuit against the republicans and the lieutenant governor.
Bedford said the state needs to put more money back into public schools before pulling away what little funding they already have.
