OWENS CROSS ROADS, AL (WAFF) -

A fire destroyed a home in Owens Cross Roads Thursday night.

The fire started at a house on Old Highway 421 near Wilson Mann Road sometime after 9 p.m.

Madison County Fire Marshal Bobby Rollins said a wood-burning oven may have sparked the fire.

Rollins said he will return to the house Friday morning to determine an official cause.

One man lived at the house but was not home at the time, according to Rollins. He said the resident's dog, however, died in the fire.

The home was heavily damaged and is uninhabitable.

The resident's father, who lives next door, said his son, 39-year-old Scott Baker, is staying with his girlfriend in the time being.

Owens Cross Roads and New Hope Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the fire.
