SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Enough signatures have been collected and presented to Smith County to hold a local option election in November for the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption in Precinct 1.
According to Karen Nelson, Smith County Election Administrator, a consulting firm called Texas Petition Strategies gathered 2,206 signatures, 371 more than the 1,835 needed.
The signatures were validated, but before the proposition is put to a vote, the issue will be presented to the Smith County Commissioners Court. The commissioners will then approve or reject the proposition for the November ballot.
The majority of Precinct 1 lies just outside the city limits to the northeast and northwest of Tyler.
