FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
City and school leaders
are working together in Florence to improve school security.
The school system plans to add a new school
resource officer. The new officer will mean all seven schools in the Florence city
school district will have police officers on duty throughout the school day.
Currently one officer
splits duty between two elementary schools, but that will all change starting this
fall.
School officials said school
safety is the number one concern for their students, faculty and staff.
"Parents send their
children to us every day entrusting them in our care. I think this is another
way we can ensure our public that their children are the most important
resource anywhere and that we will do whatever it takes to ensure that not only
they reach the academic potential, but also that we provide that safe learning
environment for them," said Dr. Janet Womack, superintendent of Florence City
Schools.
The Florence City Council
and Florence city school district have agreed to split the $55,000 salary to
pay the additional officer.
