MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

WSFA 12 News has confirmed that Montgomery Public School Superintendent Barbara Thompson was one of 7 semifinalist candidates recently interviewed for a position with the Madison, Wisconsin School System. The position was for the schools/communications coordinator.

Thompson was interviewed in person by the Madison Board of Education during the last week of January. The finalists were announced on February 4.

Thompson was not named on the finalist list, and a different person was hired for the position.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange told WSFA 12 News he was aware of Thompson's interview.

"I, in fact, talked to the recruiter who solicited Superintendent Thompson's interest in the Madison, Wisconsin job," Mayor Strange said. "We discussed it. The superintendent was reluctant to agree to have her name submitted, but she has family, owns a house and spent most of her career in that area."

Thompson was hired to be the superintendent of the Montgomery Public School System on August 1, 2009.

She previously served for 6 years as superintendent in the New Glarus School District in New Glarus, Wisconsin. She also has a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"I believe she was flattered by being recruited, but is excited to address the good opportunities and challenges we have here in Montgomery, Alabama," Mayor Strange said.
