Police organization donates to homeless man after tent slashed

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A homeless man whose tent was cut and destroyed by a Metro police officer is now getting some help from others on the force.

"I just wanted to let you know - I know you lost some stuff - we wanted to give you some things," said Sgt. Robert Weaver, with the Fraternal Order of Police.

Weaver presented Shawn Conner with a camp stove and some propane fuel, which comes after Conner lost his shelter.

A Metro police officer destroyed Conner's tent after telling the man to move off government property.

That officer has been demoted after the incident, and Conner said the gift will be a help.

"Yeah, it could be heat at night or I could cook a can of soup if I needed to," he said.

Conner said others have donated new tents after hearing about his story.

He also said the trespassing charge has been retired, and the courts will drop the charge completely if he stays out of trouble.
