MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Marshall County Commission tabled a request from the county school superintendent for a $25 car tag fee to underwrite school resource officers.

The commission did not vote for the idea, but they did not vote against it either.

Commissioners said they felt SROs should be in the schools, but they are unsure how to fund the program.

The Marshall County Commission unanimously voted to not vote on a $25 tag fee for the Marshall County school system.

The system is looking to put school resource officers in all schools, as well as have extra funds to hire more teachers and do school repairs.

Some residents said times are tough and urged commissioners to vote against it. Some commissioners felt SROs should be in the schools. They suggested maybe the commission and the school system look at cuts to raise money.

Superintendent Tim Nabors said he is glad they are working toward solving the funding problem, but cutting to raise funds is a tough proposition.

"I think we're pretty much to the bone.  We are down to zero locally funded units.  We have the last several people in our central office we've not replaced.  I don't know where much more we can cut, but, I mean, we're willing to sit down and look at anything," he said. "We're not going to sit here and say we can't do.  We will do whatever it takes to keep our kids safe."

Members of the commission said they hoped to set up a meeting with the legislative delegation in the coming few days to get them involved in the issue.
