RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Russellville Police and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation are investigating a homicide.

Authorities say it happened between 1 and 1:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Jackson Avenue. Officials said the death was a result of an apparent knife attack.

Police responded to a call in the area, and when they arrived they found 25-year-old Lesley Hope Plott dead in a ditch and her estranged husband, 33-year-old Angel Campos, in a vehicle nearby.

Investigators believe a domestic situation escalated into an assault and murder.

Investigators said Plott and Campos had recently broken up. The two left Plott's mother's home Thursday night. Plott was taking Campos to his house to get his vehicle and at some point the struggle started.

Plott's body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. The cause of death is under investigation.

Investigators are processing a black SUV that was found with the body.

Campos is in police custody at Huntsville Hospital. Investigators said he is being treated for self inflicted stab wounds.

He has been charged with murder. His bond is set at $500,000.
