Fire destroys building on Loretta Lynn's ranch

Posted: Updated:
HURRICANE MILLS, TN (WSMV) -

A fire on Thursday damaged a building on country star Loretta Lynn's sprawling Middle Tennessee ranch.

Crews were called about 6:30 p.m. to 44 Hurricane Mills Rd. in Humphreys County.

That fire happened at a building called the Cook Shack where visiting horseback riders can come and eat.

The building is quite a distance from the country star's house, so there was never any danger to it.

A propane tank caught on fire, which made for a dangerous situation for firefighters.

A witness said at one point flames were several feet high, and the entire scene looked like "a giant red haze."

Crews got the fire under control, but the building was completely destroyed.  The cause is still under investigation.

For more than half a century, Lynn has thrilled fans with her signature voice and style. Her humble beginnings and eventual superstar status are reflected on the 6,500-acre ranch in Hurricane Mills that is also a tourist attraction bearing her name.

The ranch is home, but it's also big business. It ranks as the 17th most visited attraction in Tennessee and recently suffered damage after severe storms ripped hundreds of trees out of the ground and damaged the star's plantation home where she lived for more than 20 years with husband "Doo" and their children.
