SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -
Eighty-three years after being falsely accused of rape, the Scottsboro Boys have been given posthumous pardons.
The state senate voted unanimously to issue the pardons for the nine young black men Thursday afternoon.
The case sparked national interest when the group was convicted and sentenced to death, even after one of the women involved admitted she made up her story.
State Senator Arthur Orr pushed for the pardons.
"Does it correct history? Does it change the wrongs that were done? Of course it doesn't. But it's something we can do in the 21st century to take a step to right, as best we can with the limitations we have, a wrong that was done many years ago," he said.
A special exhibit on the Scottsboro Boys opened at the Carnegie Center in Decatur Thursday night.
