BARTON, AL (WAFF) -

Hundreds of jobs are on their way to western Colbert County.

Community members are hopeful the expansions at the Barton Rail Car Plant will boost the local economy.

The community members said the expansion at the plant brings new hope to the small town.

"Hopefully, they will hire from our area as well as bringing people in and it will mean an increase in revenue for all of the businesses that we will see and influx in people and be able to serve all of them," said Tracy Wix.

Wix owns Peoples Drug and Variety.

She said the news of a local economic boost makes her optimistic about keeping the family business up and running.

"Hopeful because things have been so stagnant and down for so long; the increase in business is just a more positive attitude," she said.

Earlier this week, FreightCar America announced their plans to expand their manufacturing facility to a portion of the Barton Industrial Plant.

Officials said they hope to start production this summer and hire 200 employees by the end of the year and 400 employees by the end of 2014.

It is a rather large boost for a small community hopeful for a bright future.

"I think right now everybody is still a little cautious as to whether it's going to happen or not, but everybody's real hopeful," said Wix.
