We're less than a week away from Shelby County taking center stage at the U.S. Supreme Court in their challenge to the Voting Rights Act.
Shelby County is challenging a key part of the act which requires certain, mostly-southern states with a history of discrimination, get clearance from the Justice Department before they re-draw voting districts.
Shelby County says that's unfair and outdated. Thursday, the ACLU said the law needs to stay the way it is.
"A strong case can be made that the Voting Rights Act is the most important piece of civil rights legislation that Congress has ever enacted. The last election vividly showed that voter suppression and voter fraud are not just things of the past, they are problems of the present that continue to undermine our democratic process," Steven Shapiro, ACLU Legal Director said.
