MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A proposed $25 tag fee for schools is being debated in Marshall County.

School leaders made their case for the tag fee during a workshop meeting on Thursday.

The school superintendent will be allowed to make his case before the commission, but it is unknown whether or not there will be a vote.

The issue of the $25 tag fee was tossed around just a bit Thursday morning at the commission's work session.

Such a fee would bring in approximately $2.5-million; $800,000 of which, school officials say, would be to put school resource officers in all 15 schools. There are only four for the entire system right now.

In the meeting Thursday morning, Superintendent Tim Nabors said Albertville passed the tag fee, and they have a nice new high school to show for it, but he said they have other important needs other than a new school and he plans to lay it all out Monday morning.

Nabors believes there is community support for it, but some commissioners disagree. It will be up to one commissioner to start the voting process.

"I'll put it on the agenda if I'm requested to by a commissioner.  So far, I have had not had a request to put it on the agenda.  There's no reason to put it on the agenda if we don't have a commissioner that's willing to make a motion," said Marshall County Commission Chairman, James Hutcheson.

If the measure does not pass, Hutcheson said he plans to ask the legislative delegation to make a change in the law which would allow for the people of Marshall County to vote on the issue.

The commission meets Monday at 10 a.m.
