MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The tornado outbreak of April 27th is something most people in Madison County will never forget. Since that devastating day, agencies and residents alike have been working to figure out what they can do better.

For emergency management, it starts with a warning.

The county has five new tornado sirens with the help of grant money.

"There are also two tornado sirens that were purchased prior to April 27th but have been put up since then. That makes a total of seven additional sirens. We had about 118 sirens prior to April 27th and about 125 now," said Paige Colburn with Madison County EMA.

Once you hear the warning, you will need a place to go.

Grant money paid for more safe rooms too.

"About 100 of those have been installed in Madison County. If you think how each safe room can house between five and 10 people, that is another 500 to 1,000 people who have a safe place to go," said Colburn.

Fire departments are now mapping out those brand new safe rooms and the existing ones too, so if people get trapped by debris, emergency responders will know where to find them.

There are four community storm shelters also in the works.

The one in Harvest will be finished next week.

"It is a dome shape that is completely rounded at the top. It is 40 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 8 feet tall. It will hold about 120 people," said Director of Youth Ministries, Brittany Camp.

The shelter sits behind the Harvest Youth Club, which got slammed by both recent tornado outbreaks.

"Now the club can stay open no matter what the weather is and the children and members of the community will have a safe place to go," said Camp.

The shelter will have seating, exhaust fans for fresh air, and electric outlets.

It will be ready just in time for this year's severe weather season.
