INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA released the initial version of the ever-important men's basketball regional rankings on Wednesday, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville was ranked second in the South Region. At the conclusion of the regular season and conference tournaments, the rankings will be used to seed the NCAA South Regional portion of the national tournament.
Only games against Division II opponents are considered for the purpose of the rankings.
The top eight in the regional rankings make the NCAA tournament, though it is possible for less to qualify if an automatic berth is won by a team outside of the top eight. The automatic berths are granted to the champions of the three conference tournaments in the South Region – the Gulf South Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Sunshine State Conference.
Florida Southern holds down the top spot followed by UAH and Saint Leo. Saturday's opponent North Alabama sits in fourth with Rollins rounding out the top five.
Eckerd is in sixth with Benedict at No. 7, and Christian Brothers rounds out the field of those who would be in the tournament if the postseason began with this release of the rankings as it is in eighth.
Nova Southeastern and Morehouse round out the rankings in ninth and 10th, respectively.
