MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Marshall County's school superintendent is asking, again, for a $25 assessment for car tags for better security at schools.

He is asking again because some of the commissioners were concerned there was not enough detail where the money will be spent the first time.

Superintendent Tim Nabors plans to give them a full report, and school safety is on the top of his list.

"Oh no. I'm not going to give up the fight. To me, our kids are worth more than that," said Nabors.

He said he plans to again seek more funding for more school resource officers.

The system has 15 schools and just four resource officers.

As it stands now, a gunman could get into a Marshall County school in virtually no time at all.

"No, if that catastrophic event hits, no, I don't think anyone would feel safe in the current situation we're in," said Claysville Elementary Principal Tim Isbill.

Isbill said he would feel a lot safer if they had a school resource officer to meet an intruder at the front door. Instead, when they encounter problems, they have to wait.

"Our first call is the resource officer at Grant, which is about 20, 25 minutes away," said Isbill.

Two years ago, an irate parent was stopped after he made a threat to the Asbury school office staff that he was on his way to harm them, but that school had a resource officer.

"If we'd not had that resource officer there, very possibly, that parent could have beat the sheriff's department getting there, and then we would have had a major issue," Nabors said.

Nabors urges parents who support the plan to call their county commissioner.

He plans to address them at their Monday meeting.
