PRICEVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Monday night meeting was all about gun safety and being a responsible gun owner.

Morgan County law enforcement met with only women to discuss gun safety and laws at Veteran's Park Community Center in Priceville.

Bridgett Hokett arrived early to get a first row seat.

"You never know what could happen. That's why I came," she said. "And I have small kids, so you need to protect yourself."

Sheriff Ana Franklin said a meeting like this has been in the works for a while.

"What we wanted to do is give them an opportunity and have certified fire arms instructors go over the basic safety techniques," she said.

Techniques that people Hokett said are important for anyone who is in the market for a gun should know.

"For us, it's a good thing and a good opportunity because a lot of people don't have anybody in their lives to show and educate them so this is great," she said.

Franklin said in the last few months, gun ownership among women has had a huge increase.

The class also reminded women about the laws when it comes to owning a firearm and knowing your rights.

"We felt it was an important topic to breach with women now," Franklin said.  "There are so many more women that work away from home and that are single and are actually heads of the households and they feel they need the ability to protect themselves."

Monday night's meeting was all about learning; the women will have to wait until Saturday at 9 a.m. before they can take what they learned to the gun range.

For more information, call the Morgan County Sheriff's office at (256) 351-4800.

On Thursday, February 21, there will be a meeting for women and men.  It starts at 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Park Community Center.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
