DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The National Weather Service will teach a class for Storm Spotters Tuesday night in DeKalb County.

The DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency will also be there for the event.

They held a similar class last year and had approximately 100 people in attendance.

The two hour Storm Spotters class will be taught on the campus of Northeast Alabama Community College in the Powell community between Scottsboro and Rainsville on Alabama Highway 35.

EMA officials said Storm Spotters are the eyes on the ground for the National Weather Service during severe weather.

They can verify if a tornado is actually on the ground causing damage, but they also help the EMA. Officials said coupled with Ham Radio Operators in the field and at the Emergency Operations Center, they're also helpful with damage assessment.

"Amateur radio operators… if we get reports of damage, we can actually send them out to do damage assessments, and they can tell us what kind of damage is out there - whether or not it's trees blown down or a house blown away," said Michael Posey, DeKalb County EMA officer.

The class will be held in Room 106 of the new health education building from 6 to 8 p.m. You do not have to pre-register, and it is absolutely free.
