DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
A group of elementary students took a field trip to the dentist Friday.
Calhoun Community College participated in the Give Kids a Smile program.
The national campaign provides free dental check-ups for kids from low-income families.
Volunteers made sure it was a fun day for them.
They set up another room for crafts and face painting before they saw the doctor.
"Most of these kids, their teeth are excellent. Preventative care has been outstanding. So most of them will basically receive a cleaning, an exam, all of them will receive a dental exam, and they also go through and do a quick physical," said Karen Chockley, Calhoun Dental Assisting Program Director.
Dental assisting students also taught correct brushing and oral hygiene tips.
