FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

A Muscle Shoals man was found guilty of murder in Lauderdale County on Friday.

A Lauderdale County jury found Alfred Shawn Johnson guilty of brutally beating Keith Barnett back in 2000 and leaving him for dead near the Tennessee state line.

Johnson and his brother Shannon were accused of killing Keith Barnett in 2000.

The defense began calling witnesses in Johnson's murder trial Thursday. Johnson was expected to take the stand to testify on his own behalf, but Johnson waived his right to testify.

Shannon pleaded guilty in exchange for testimony against his brother, but he also chose not testify.

"This day is the best day I've had in several years. I can go home and sleep tonight," said Kenneth Barnett, the victim's father.

It was an emotional night inside the courthouse as Keith Barnett's family heard the verdict in his murder case.

"I never stopped fighting for my son... He was my life," said Barnett.

He believes justice has been served in a case that once went cold.

"Thirteen years, yeah, 13 years - long ones, painful ones," he said.

Johnson had a lot to say as officers escorted him back to jail.

"I'm not guilty, and I love my family," he said.

Johnson said he doesn't know what happened the night Barnett was beaten.

Johnson said it's out of his hands.

"I hate what happened to Mr. Barnett. I just don't believe that Mr. Johnson did it, and I wish the family would get to find out what happened to their son," said Johnson's attorney, Jamy Poss.
