HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A broken gas pipe that caused a gas leak in Huntsville has been repaired.
Huntsville Utilities crews spent nearly five hours fixing an underground cast-iron pipe that burst after midnight Friday.
It happened at a gas pressure regulating station on Coleman Street in the Five Points neighborhood.
Crews blocked a portion of the street between Rison Avenue and Halsey Avenue while repairs continued.
Surrounding residents reported a strong odor of natural gas following the leak. A crew member said any escaped gas dissipated quickly and did not pose health or safety risks in the neighborhood.
A portion of the pipe was shut down as crews fixed the line but homes near the station were not affected.
Crews are investigating what caused the underground line to break.
