Morgan Co. offers gun safety classes

Ryan Matthew Sims, 21, faces multiple charges tonight for allegedly holding students at gunpoint Tuesday at Chelsea Middle School in Shelby County.

Incidents like that, the Sandy Hook school shooting, and the push for stricter gun laws may be behind a huge spike in gun sales.

However, with all these new guns in the hands of owners, law enforcement and gun experts are concerned.

Officials in Morgan County are taking action by being proactive. They want to make sure that those who own a gun or are considering buying one knows the responsibility that comes with it.

Morgan County, in conjunction with the town of Priceville, is hosting a gun safety class.

Jerry Welch is a weapons expert and a town councilman for Priceville.

He will lead two classes for those may need training, one for women only and a second for anyone.

With recent news around the country, Welch said he has received so many calls from people who bought guns for protection but have no idea how to even use them.

The classes will focus on safety in the home, where Welch said most accidents tend to happen with guns. He said this is all about saving lives.

"The true responsibility is after you buy that gun and that bullet, it is to take it home and secure that weapon so nobody else gets hurt," he said.

If you are interested in gun safety training, the classes are open to Morgan County residents and are free.

The classes will be at the Veterans Park Community Center on Highway 67 at 6:30 p.m. The one on February 19 is just for women, and there is one on February 21 for everyone.
