DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

After the bus wreck in Danville Tuesday morning, are Morgan County school officials considering putting seatbelts on the bus? The answer is probably not.

"In this case, seat belts would not have mattered at all because the kids still would have come forward because it was such a hard lick," said Maintenance and Transportation Director Hank Summerford.

Two years ago, a study was done by the state regarding the belts on buses issue.

"They put seatbelts on some buses in Alabama to see if there was anything that could change any of the accidents and the outcome. They found out the seatbelts did not change anything because of the safety that's put into our buses already," he said. "There are four inch thick cushions on each one of the seats, front and back, and if the students are sitting correctly in their seats, then they are going to be fine."

Students are encouraged not to sit in the very back of the bus, if possible, in case the bus is rear ended.  After accidents like the one Tuesday morning, Summerford said a full review is done to make sure their top priority - safety - stays that way.

"We can replace a bus, we can replace cars, but we can't replace children or drivers," he said.

Despite the fender bender, Summerford said buses are still safe.

"Buses are still the safest mode of transportation on the highway," he said.  "There are less bus wrecks than any other mode of transportation."
