Ala. House approves career tech bond issue bill

The Alabama House has approved a bill to sell $50 million in bonds to be used to help Alabama public schools upgrade career tech programs.

The House voted 93-1 to pass the bill which the sponsor Republican Rep. Mac Buttram of Cullman said would help improve the training to prepare high school students for careers.

Several legislators questioned how the bond issue would be repaid. The chairman of the House education budget committee, Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery, says the bonds would be repaid with the additional tax revenue created by additional students being trained.

Buttram says the bill is written so that money would be distributed to schools across the state.

Rep. A.J. McCampbell of Demopolis asked that small, rural counties receive a fair share of the money.
