LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Day one of testimony wrapped up in a Shoals murder trial.

Alfred Johnson is accused of beating Keith Barnett with a baseball bat and leaving him for dead.

Emotions were high inside the courtroom as Barnett's family listened to attorneys describe the night he was beaten and left for dead. The family was visibly upset and brought to tears as the jury heard testimony describing what took place.

In fact, several family members turned their heads as prosecutors shared a photo of Keith Barnett from the night he was beaten - his face, unrecognizable.

Prosecutors said Alfred and his brother, Shannon Johnson, beat Barnett with a baseball bat and then dumped his body near the Tennessee state line.

Shannon was charged with murder, but he has since pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Alfred's attorneys claim the brothers are not responsible, stating the witnesses in the case are unreliable.

They also said no DNA evidence was ever found on the brothers or in their truck.

Prosecutors will continue to present their case to the jury Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.
