Tigers prepare for Gamecocks

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

If you take a look at the LSU Tigers' 4-6 SEC record you would think they are having a bad season.

Yes, basketball is judged by wins and losses, but three of those six losses were by five points or less.

One of those losses came Saturday in Tuscaloosa as Alabama beat the Tigers 60-57. Once again the Tigers got off to a slow start, but they scratched their way back into the game as they have done so many times this season. Unfortunately the Tigers could never take the lead after having a couple chances to do so in the final minutes.

The Tigers are still trying to piece together better starts so they do not have to play come back. LSU's other close losses were against Auburn and Kentucky.

The game against South Carolina on January 16 is another that got away from the Tigers. The Gamecocks beat the Tigers 82-73 in overtime in a game LSU should have won.

Johnny Jones and his team will get another crack at South Carolina Thursday when they make the trip to Columbia. In that January loss, LSU had a four point lead with two minutes left in the game, but could not close it out. Johnny O' Bryant missed a three pointer at the buzzer to win the game. Michael Carrera had a coming out party of some sort scoring 23 points.

Coach Jones emphasized that this time around his team needs to avoid the turnovers and be patient in their offense which will lead to higher percentage shots.

The Gamecocks will go into this contest just 2-8 in the SEC with 4 straight losses. They are coming off a 66-61 loss to Tennessee on Saturday.

Thursday's game with South Carolina will start a stretch of three games in six days for LSU. The Tigers will host Mississippi State Saturday, and then go to Tennessee Tuesday.

Tip off from Columbia is set for 6:00 p.m. Central on ESPN2.
