Priceville passes alcohol ordinance

Posted: Updated:

The town of Priceville is now able to sell alcohol. The town council voted unanimously to pass the ordinance a few hours ago, but not before putting restrictions on it.

The mayor said even though this ordinance passed Monday night, sales won't start until at least mid-March, and you will actually have to go inside the store to find out if they sell alcohol because the town also put a limit on advertisements.

By a count of six to zero - the town of Priceville approved alcohol sales in their community for the first time in history.

Residents said the decision isn't based on booze; it's based on bucks.

"We were missing that tax," said Ken Hebert.

Hebert has called the small community home for the last few years. He will also sit on an alcohol review committee that will look at alcohol license applications.

"If you want to drink, you can drink. If you don't, like myself I'm not a drinker, but I like the taxes. I want to see Priceville grow," he said.

Priceville Mayor Melvin Duran watched the wet-dry issue become a constant topic of conversation late last year, but he wasn't surprised when opposition groups failed to show up to Monday's meeting.

"At the last meeting, they were happy with what we had in the ordinance. They had gone over it. Even though a lot of them still preferred Priceville not to be wet, they felt like the ordinance we had in place was sufficient," said Duran.

And some of the restrictions in that ordinance may raise a few eyebrows. The town will not allow any outside alcohol advertising. Retailers will also not be allowed to sell single cans other than a 25.4 ounce size.

The mayor said because this ordinance is now in play, he expects other businesses and restaurants to consider moving to Priceville that otherwise wouldn't have in the past.

He also said it's too early to tell how much revenue the town will bring in from the alcohol sales.
