The University of North Alabama women's basketball team regained sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference standings with a 52-42 home victory over Delta State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall.
Nichelle Fillmore scored 15 points and Jennifer Towne pulled down a game-high eight rebounds as the Lions improved to 9-4 in GSC play, including a season sweep over DSU.
North Alabama (16-7 overall) trailed by a single point at the break before outscoring the visitors 31-20 in the second half. Delta State (13-7 overall, 8-4 GSC) shot just 25 percent from the floor in the second half, connecting on only seven field goals.
A jumper by Sarah Bailey put UNA ahead 27-26 with 17:03 remaining and the Lions never lost the lead. The Lady Statesmen stayed within single digits until the final minute of play when the Lions hit 5-of-6 free throws to put the game out of reach.
Towne, who hit a three-point basket as time expired to give the Lions a 59-58 victory at Delta State on Jan. 5, finished with 13 points on Saturday to reach double figures for the eighth time on the year. Baily rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 10 points.
Neither team had success from three-point range on the day. DSU was only 1-for-8 while the Lions were 0-for-4 from long range. Seneca Walton led the Lady Statesmen with 13 points.
UNA will play at Union next Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. on the UU campus in Jackson, Tenn.
